Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Kareena Kapoor Khan starrer controversial crime-thriller Udta Punjab has opened really well on its opening day. Despite getting mixed reviews from critics, Udta Punjab has managed to collect Rs 10.05 crore on day one, that is more than expected.

This Anurag Kashyap production venture directed by Abhishek Chaubey has been in the news for the past 15 days due to its malignant content related to drug addiction surrounded among the youth of Punjab.
CBFC (Censor Board of Film Certification) had approved the film with 89 cuts, which had been protested by the producers. They challenged this verdict first to the review committee and then to the High Court, who finally cleared the film with just one cut.
Due to this, Udta Punjab had been in the headlines for the entire last week and this gave unintentional publicity to the film. People have lots of curiosity about the film and these above par numbers are also the result of this controversy.
Udta Punjab had got average to negative reviews from the critics but the footfalls on day one was very good and occupancies were around 50 percent throughout the day.
These are much greater numbers as per the expectations. About a month ago, everyone was predicted Udta Punjab to collect around Rs 4 to 5 crore but things now been completely altered.
If we talk about the box office records, Udta Punjab has now become 5th biggest first day opening grosser of the year surpassing Kya Kool Hain Hum 3 (Rs 8.15 crore).
Now after this smashing start on its very first day, Udta Punjab have to maintained the pace in the coming two days. If it gets steady from here, there is a strong possibility that it will finish its first weekend in between Rs 25-30 crore.
