Despite it’s mixed to poor reviews, Emraan Hashmi starrer Azhar, which released yesterday gets off to a very decent start at the domestic box office. Azhar, which is based on the life of the former Indian cricket captain Mohammad Azharuddin, has collected Rs 6.30 crore on the first day, which is not a bad opening.
Directed by Tony D’Souza, Azhar has been waiting for a long time and it has already created lots of buzz among the people with its posters and some popular songs. The whole team of Azhar including Azharuddin had been promoting the film throughout the country and finally it has hit the screens.

Azhar got more than 1500 screens in India and we add another 500 screens of the overseas market, it is a big world wide release. As the film is based on the life of controversial cricket star, who was the accused of match fixing, people really wants to watch the film. The first day occupancy was around 40 to 50 percent which is actually good for an Emraan Hashmi film. His past few films had not even close to these healthy numbers. However, this is his 5th best opening of his career. His best till date is Raaz 3 (2012) which had collected Rs 10.25 crore on Day one followed by Jannat 2 (Rs 8.50 crore), Ghanchakkar (7.40 crore) and Murder 2 (7.1 crore).
Well, Emraan Hashmi will definitely happy to see these numbers. Azhar, which also stars Prachi Desai and Nargis Fakhri in important roles, will further see growth in the coming first weekend. If it could manage to get better than this in the next two days, then anything around Rs 20 plus crore is on the cards, which will be one of the best opening weekends of the year.
