The first quarter of 2016 has shown many big films like Wazir, Fitoor, Ghayal Once Again and Rocky Handsome but the surprisingly, some low budgets films such as Airlift and Neerja made the mark with highest grossing bollywood movies of 2016 at box office.
Airlift, went on to become the first film of the year to cross the coveted 100 crore mark. The first half of 2016 has almost finished but no other film has managed to enter 100 crore club except Airlift.
The other film that brought the attention of the people was Sonam Kapoor’s Neerja, which collected more than Rs 74 crore, one of the biggest profitable films that made only with the budget of Rs 21 crore.
Neerja had recovered its making costs within its first weekend and collected Rs 22.01 crore. In between these good goings, Bollywood also seen some huge disappointments with the biggest flops of the year. The top most was Aditya Roy Kapoor and Katrina Kaif starrer Fitoor, which crashed at the box office so badly and couldn’t make onto recovered the making costs.
The second quarter of 2016 was somehow far better than the previous one but the start was not as expected. Shah Rukh Khan starrer Fan was one of the most anticipated films of 2016. Everyone is so confident that the film would be the biggest grosser of 2016 but surprisingly all went just opposite to the expectations and Fan, after a massive opening, crashed down at the box office.
The film, which made the budget of Rs 105 crore, not even got closer to this figure and stuck around 80 plus crore. This was even bigger disaster than Fitoor. The only pleasing thing about Fan was that it became the Bollywood’s highest opening weekend grossers of 2016 with Rs 52 crore under its belt.
Apart from this, the films which had enjoyed a very good opening weekend in 2016 are Karan Johar’s family drama Kapoor and Sons (Rs 26.35 crore), Arjun Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor Khan featuring Ki and Ka (Rs25.23 crore). Both these films had done really well in its life time plus got some positive response from the audience.Ekta Kapoor’s bold adult comedy Kya Kool Hain Hum 3 has also managed to get good Rs 20.15 crore at the end of the first weekend.
In the last week of April, Sabbir Khan’s directorial romantic-action Baaghi hit the screens featuring a fresh pair of Tiger Shroff and Shraddha Kapoor. Baaghi received a very good response from the people despite the poor reviews and with Rs 38.58 crore, it went onto become 5th highest first weekend grosser of 2016 behind Fan and Airlift. Baaghi (
Baaghi (Rs 74.94) is still running successful at the theaters and entered in its 3rd week. It already surpassed the lifetime collections of Kapoor and Sons an on its way to become the third biggest grosser of the year after it will add some more lakhs in its total.
