Hindi Film industry’s stalwart actor and filmmaker Manoj Kumar has declared this year’s prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award that is considered as the highest honour given by Indian Government to those who gave important contribution towards Indian cinema.
Manoj Kumar, who has popularly known as Bharat Kumar, has been famous for his patriotic films such as Upkaar, Purab Aur Paschim and Kranti. Due to his patriotic films, his fans gave him a new name, Bharat Kumar.
After getting this unexpected news, Manoj Kumar is quite surprised with this pleasant surprise and felt very honoured to be informed this news from his friends. 78 year old Manoj Kumar will be given this most honoured Award of Hindi cinema which consists of a Golden Lotus along with the prize money of 10 lakh and a shawl.
According to Manoj, I was resting in the afternoon when Ashok Pandit and Manoj Bhandarkar were called and gave this good news. My heartiest thank to the government who consider me for this award. Despite his poor health, Manoj will reach Delhi to receive the award.
Some popular films in which Manoj Kumar featured were Hariyali Aur Rasta, Wo Kaun Thi, Himalaya ki God Mein, Pathar Ke Sanam, Shaheed and Roti Kapda Aur Makaan. Later on, he become filmmaker and directed some hit patriotic films like Upkaar and Kranti. For Upkaar, he got National Award of Best Actor and in 1992, he was felicitated with Padma Shree by Indian Government.
Manoj Kumar, who originally belongs to Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkwa district, was born on 24 July, 1937. His real name is Harikrishna Giri Goswami. After the partition, his family had been shifted to Delhi.
After completing his graduation from Delhi University’s Hindu College, he had decided to make his career in films. His idol from the industry has always been Dilip Kumar from the beginning and he had get the opportunity to work with his idol in Kranti.
