Priyanka Chopra starrer Jai Gangajal had seen an average first weekend at the domestic box office. This crime thriller directed by Prakash Jha has collected around Rs 6.75 crore thus taking its toll to Rs 18.75 crore after its first weekend.
The sequel of Gangajal ( 2003), that released in India in around 2500 screens has started off well on Friday with Rs 5.50 crore. Saturday had a shown good growth with 6.25 crore in its kitty. Although Sunday was a big holiday and the makers thought that the footfalls could increase heavily but it only had Rs 6.75 crore and just managed to get closer to a decent total.
Made with the total budget of around Rs 25 crore, Jai Gangajal has almost reached there and Monday being another big holiday of Mahashivratri which might be the bonus for the film and it would surely surpass the cost of productions.
If we talk about the box office records, the numbers of Jai Gangajal are much lesser than Priyanka’s last big film Marry Kom which had collected Rs 28 crore on its first weekend but it is higher than Rani Mukherjee’s Mardani (14.34 crore) that was another women oriented film.
After it passed the first weekend test with good numbers, now this crime thriller wants to hold on its postion slight better on the coming weekdays. Perhaps, it is not facing a stiff competetion with the other released of the week Zubaan which had a paltry numbers, that will give its huge boost to perform well.
On the other hand, Sonam Kapoor starrer Neerja continues in its glorious run on week number 3 and collected Rs 6.04 crore. Now its total box office collections after week 3 is Rs 63.79 crore and it is one of the biggest superhits of the year. Still the counting is on and it will add some more before ending its fantastic run at the box office.
