It seems that this year for Bollywood belongs to those films which are related to true stories. After Akshay Kumar starrer Airlift Ad filmmaker Ram Madhvani has come up with his debut directorial film Neerja based on the life of a courageous Mumbai girl Neerja Bhanot who had shown immense courage to save around 300 odd on-board personals in Pan Am flight 73 in 1986. She lost her life, but become unsung hero for many youngsters. Sonam Kapoor is playing the role of Neerja. Let’s see how the film portrays her life on silver screen.
The story of Neerja revolves around a Mumbai girl Neerja Bhanot (Sonam Kapoor) who was a flight attendant in Pan Am Flight 73. On 5th September 1986, she was on her duty and flying from Mumbai to USA.
She along with the other crew members informed that the flight has been hijacked by some group of Terrorists at Karachi Airport in Pakistan. The flight was occupied with around 400 passengers. At this adverse conditions, despite move out of the plane, Neerja with the help of her quick thinking, dedication and fearless nature, saved the life of those on-board passengers but ultimately shot dead by terrorists.
Writing and transforming a real story into a film is quiet uphill task but the trio of Saiwyn Quardras, Sanyuktha Chawla and Shaikh has done commendable job. If we ignore some regular flaws, overall Neerja is treat to watch. The portrayal of each and every character is looking real and any moment you will not feel that you are watching a film. As the film goes deeper, you will get into it and connects with Neerja, This is the beauty of this film.
About the performances, Sonam Kapoor as Neerja will surprise you by her unbelievable acting. This is certainly her best film of her career. In every single frame, her eyes have also told a lot and her acting skills have come up nicely. Shabana Azmi has done a brilliant job as Neerja’s mother. Here swinging nature of a caring mother is extremely amazing and close to your heart. The other characters like Yogendra Tiku as Neeja’s dad and Shekhar Ravijiani as her love interest has honestly played their bit.
Final words for Neerja are if you are true fans of biographical films and want to have blend of story plus phenomenal performances, this is for you. You will not disappoint after coming out of theaters.
