Peepli Live co-director Mahmood Farooqui Has Acquitted in Rap Case

On 25th of September, the Delhi high court acquits Peepli Live co-director Mahmood Farooqui in a rape case while he was accused of raping a researcher from Columbia University. Delhi court sentenced him to 7 years of imprisonment and also fined Rs 50000 was given to the victim. Mahmood Farooqui and his wife Anusha Rizvi are best Kwon for Peepli Live.

According to the American researcher, one of her friends introduced her with critically acclaimed satirical comedy film Peepli Live co-director Mahmood Farooqui then they became friends. Once (28 March 2015) Mahmood Farooqui invited her at the residence in Sukhdev Vihar, South Delhi. She filed FIR on 19th June after which Delhi Police filed a charge sheet against Farooqui and held him on 21st June 2015.

Then court trial started on 9 September 2015 ended on 4 August 2016 resulting in 7 years of the sentence to Mahmood Farooqui. Now 44-year-old Mahmood Farooqui acquits by High Court giving the benefit of the doubt. After Farooqui was found guilty, Delhi Police requested the court to give life imprisonment which was not possible according to the law.

God knows the truth but these kinds of matters are shameful for the industry. Recently, Shah Rukh Khan’s Chennai Express (2014) co-producer Karim Morani who is also an accused in the 2G telecom scam surrenders to Hyderabad Police in a rape case took place several times in 2015.

Mahmood Farooqui is a writer and did a film along with his wife Anusha Rizvi who made directional debut through Peepli Live (2010). Mahmood Farooqui along with his uncle and noted Urdu poet Shamsur Rahman Faruqi has played important roles in Dastangoi’s revival in the 21st century.
