In 1997, she first acted in Mani Ratnam’s Political drama Tamil film Iruvar received too many appreciations from critics and two National Film Awards. In the same year, she appeared in Hindi film Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya (1997) which did not well at Box office.

She started to get noticed as an actress when she appeared in Sanjay Leela Bhansali directed Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999) and awarded by Filmfare Award for Best Actress. The actress has worked in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, and English films.
